General Assembly

Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC)

At the moment, global security is threatened by two major challenges: the unchecked proliferation of nuclear weapons and the increasing use of private military contractors (PMCs) in combat zones. While nuclear disarmament remains a long-standing goal of the international community, rising geopolitical tensions and the modernization of nuclear arsenals have stalled meaningful progress. Simultaneously, PMCs operate in conflicts worldwide with limited oversight, often blurring the lines between state and non-state military. These issues raise critical concerns about sovereignty, accountability, and the enforcement of international law.

Delegates will work toward strengthening existing arms control agreements and addressing nuclear-sharing policies between different nations. As well as addressing the role of nuclear-armed states and their commitments to further disarmament, establishing international legal frameworks for PMC operations, holding PMCs accountable for human rights violations and war crimes and defining the role of PMCs in peacekeeping and conflict resolution.

Hi, I’m Stephen! I’m a senior at Flagler College majoring in History with a minor in Law. I have been in Model UN for a year now and have had the opportunity to compete and take part in multiple conferences. Before attending Flagler, I served in the military which expanded my interests in both global affairs and public service. I hope to continue building on these experiences after graduation, either by pursuing a law degree or a postgraduate degree in theology.

Beyond academics, I enjoy engaging in political and theological discussions, as well as reading on a wide range of topics that deepen my understanding of the world. In my free time, I like spending time with family and close friends as well as exploring and traveling to new places. I am extremely excited about FLAGMUN II and the topics we get to discuss in GA! Braden and I chose these topics because we feel they are crucial in today's world. With many differing opinions on how to handle these ongoing issues, I hope this committee creates meaningful debate and diplomacy. Looking forward to seeing what you all contribute and your solutions to these important issues!

Hey, I'm Braden. I am a sophomore at Flagler majoring in Data Science. This year, I am honored to serve as director and chair for FlagMUN. I joined Model UN to challenge myself academically and personally, and it quickly became one of the most meaningful parts of my college experience. Outside of conferences and classes, I enjoy spending time with friends, learning new skills, and nerding out about movies and video games!
